New Social Drinking App Unveiled on Smart Phones

Fellow beer snobs, how many times haver you been around the friend that has a smart phone and always brags about how he's the mayor of this place and he has to check-in when you get to each pub?

I've been there too. I'm also a participant in the Foursquare location app on my smart phone and I went through a number of stages of depression when I lost my mayorship at my favorite drinking establishment. For you beer fans out there that don't care much for letting everyone know where your are all of the time, there's a new app that enables you to check into whatever beer you're enjoying.

Untappd began as a mobile based app (which means it wasn't downloadable from an app store or market, but only ran through your phone's internet browser), but this past weekend Untappd released native apps for both iPhones and Droids.

The inaugural weekend was a little bumpy as the app crashed a few times, but that was most likely because of the fact that the Great American Beer Festival was going on at the same time in Denver. So, many excited beer drinkers were happily checking-in to their brews.

When you check into your beer, you're given the option to rate it as well as posting the check-in to either your Facebook or Twitter accounts. So, you can spread your beer sermons to your friends and followers and either educate them or annoy the hell out of them if you so please.

The app also let's you make a beer wish list in case you're ever in my position and have so many more beers you want to try. You now have a convenient way to keep track of what you've had your eye on.

Even when I used the mobile extension, it was one of my favorite apps to use. I highly recommend it if you already use apps like Foursquare or Miso. You can also follow me on Twitter if you're ever interested in what beers I've checked into. I tend to post them to my feed and give my impressions.
