Pumpkin Ale Week Continues: Day II

If you've already feeling festive from the first post of Pumpkin Ale Week, then get ready for another edition. Two more beers were tried. Two more beers are ranked. And then there were four.

No. 6: Post Road Pumpkin Ale by Brooklyn Brewery

From Southampton Pumpkin Ale at No. 8 to the current spot there isn't a big difference in numbers, but there's definitely a difference in beer quality.

Appearance: Post Road is almost as dark as Southampton's, but it's not as dark and as resembling any river here in the Pittsburgh area. You actually want to drink this. The head was a lot thicker, creamier and visible than the previous two beers.

ABV: Five percent

Smell: Post Road's sent is a strong one. Mainly nutmeg, cinnamon and whatever spices might also be in the brew. I couldn't find a hint of pumpkin, but then again my sense of smell isn't the best in the world.

Taste: For what this beer lacks in pumpkin smell, it surely makes up for in pumpkin taste. It mixes very well with the cinnamon and nutmeg. Add that with the creamy head and you've got yourself a hell of a beer. It goes down really smooth.

Overall Rating:

You really can't go wrong in selecting this beer. Brooklyn has a fine track record, especially with its seasonal brews (try its Oktoberfest). Nothing in this beer is too overpowering. So, if you're not a big fan of the overpowering alcohol or spice taste this might be the pumpkin ale for you.

No. 5: Punkin Ale by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

I tried this beer back when this blog was only a brainchild, so I apologize for not having any visual evidence.

Appearance: Punkin pours with a color that's somewhere between an orange or a brown. It resembles that of the shade of Frog Hollow Double Pumpkin. The head is the thickest and creamiest of any pumpkin ale that I tried. This beer is extremely appetizing.

ABV: 7 percent

Smell: Cinnamon, cinnamon and more cinnamon. It kind of was a little bit overboard for my taste. The smell of this beer is really sweet. Almost like a desert. Pumpkin pie for instance.

Taste: So far on these rankings, this is the best-tasting pumpkin beer. When you read other pumpkin beer reviews you always see the words "earthy pumpkin taste." Well, this is the part where I say that. Along with the cinnamon this beer gives you the earthy pumpkin taste and man is it heavenly.

Overall Rating:

In the beer world, you expect anything with the name of Dogfish to live up to its name. This beer will blow your mind. When people start thinking of pumpkin ales around this time of year, this one is brought up consistently.
