Review: Young's Double Chocolate Stout

I've always told my fellow beer snobs that I wasn't ever a stout kind of guy. Nor did I ever plan on being so. After a visit to my favorite establishment that serves adult beverages I found my world turned upside down. For you beginning beer drinkers, I urge you to take heed on this advice.

Try as many beers as you can.

Following that one piece of advice has always paid off for me. Especially yesterday when I decided to stick with the dark beers and tried Young's Double Chocolate Stout by Wells and Young Ltd.

I have to admit my mind was blown. I didn't expect at all to be so enthralled with this beer. Your first sip slams your taste buds with a layer of creaminess, which obviously comes from the beer's head. What stunned me was that the head stayed on the beer all of the way down the glass. It stays as thick as it is when it's poured, which was when I snagged that picture.

The color is a very dark brown. You don't feel a lot of carbonation as it goes down. The main taste I was able to pick out was chocolate, but I would place it more on the dark chocolate side. The aftertaste gives the slightest hint of coffee. When you take your next sips, you get a taste of the creamy head each time. The three flavors are a perfect combination. The brew goes down so smoothly.

Double Chocolate Stout immediately vaulted itself up my list of favorite beers.

Overall Rating:

When it came to stouts, I always thought of a burnt coffee taste like a Guinness. How naive of me. The world of stout is a much wider one than was anticipated. I also was able to try Breakfast Stout by Founders Brewing, but that's another story for another time!
