There was a noticeable difference from the Young's Double Chocolate when I had this beer placed in front of me, as there wasn't much of a head to the Breakfast Stout by Founders Brewing. So, I expected the head to stay with the beer throughout the entire sitting.
I thought wrong, as there isn't much of a head to it at all. So, I'm hoping this was just an anomaly. The head wasn't totally obvious in sight, but it was most certainly there in taste. I got a hint of cinnamon in my first few sips, which reminded me of the many pumpkin ales I've sampled with cinnamon gracing the rim of the glass. I must say that a beer producing that effect without the mess of cinnamon everywhere is definitely a plus. The logo above says it all. Breakfast Stout is truly the king of most stouts, as it combines the three general flavors of stouts (chocolate, coffee and oatmeal). I'm still developing my taste for oatmeal in stouts, but the coffee was poignant in this brew. The inclusion of both Kona and Sumatra coffees is probably the reason that this is the darkest-bodied beer I've ever drank. Like your father always said, never judge a beer by its color. I'm sure it went something like that.
I expected this beer to resemble the burnt-coffee taste I get from Guinness, but I was surprised that something that could be so dark could taste so pleasant.
I'm not much of a coffee drinker. So, if anything would push me away from a stout it's certainly coffee. I'm man enough to admit that I enjoyed this one, though.
